Church of the Sacred Earth:
a union of pagan congregations

"CoSE" was founded in 1987 and received our 501(c)3 tax exemption in
1989. At our peak we had  congregations and members throughout the
Northeast and even a few down in Florida.  Over the last decade our
activity slowed tremendously, but in 2023 our board of directors
reformed and recommitted to CoSE’s renewed growth.  The church is structured to provide support both to congregations and to individuals.

CoSE itself is very loose in dogma - every congregation is autonomous
in belief and action. Our members have diverse spiritual and religious
practices including but not limited to Druidic, Wiccan, Greek
reconstruction, animist, Nordic, Taoist, and Christian (both gnostic
and more "mainline") approaches. The common denominator that brings us together is reverence and respect for the divine as manifest through
nature, hence the second half of church's official name; "a Union of
Pagan Congregations".  That earth-based spirituality, combined with a
strong respect and commitment by church members to encourage and
support diversity - gives what many members call the church's "feel"
of safety, caring and respect.

The services and rites, therefore, (and even the general beliefs)
within the church are varied. Some folks practice the rituals and
celebrate the festivals of Celtic or other Indo-European peoples. Some
groups have such diverse membership that they draw upon the entire
world's mythical, mystical and religious beliefs and practices as the
seasons and circumstances demand. However, as mentioned before, we all have the common thread of being based on the sacrality of the rhythms, tides and seasons of the natural world.  We worship nature and try to learn to listen to her and learn how to live more in harmony and
attunement with her cycles and seasons.

Each CoSE congregation meets as often as it chooses. The church as a whole holds an annual gathering in the summer to bring as many folks
as possible together. CoSE has several ordained ministers,
and an established system for ordination. We perform the usual ceremonies and act as public relations for the church. The church itself is governed by a board of directors who make policy decisions and oversee the day-to-day operations of the church.
